Journal of a Brown Sand Sailor
Timothy L. Francis

6/11/06 Basra, Iraq

Here it is, about 8 am on a hot day (40 degrees C) in Kuwait. We’re speeding along the highway back towards Iraq and we begin passing yellow jumpsuits, spaced at intervals of 100m or so. Each man has a broom, and is pushing and sweeping sand, rocks and other debris from the side of the road. There are no support cars or trucks for miles. There are no water bottles in sight. Kuwait is one of the richest countries in the world. Are street cleaning vehicles really that expensive?

Makes you think.
