6/14/06 Basra, Iraq

Driving through southern Iraq, one comes across some odd things, like picked clean T-72s or BTs (all that’s left will be the frame, the rest has been stripped off for scrap). But I thought this picturesque building pretty surprising. At first glance, it looks like some fort from Bedu raiding days. But there were men with AKs at the front gates, and they flew a green flag, so they weren’t Iraqi government (Gangster compound? Militia HQ? We didn't know...), that’s for sure.

I thought the pic came out pretty good for one taken through the window of a moving jeep.
