A little history: The town was founded in 1849, but never amounted to anything and was a ghost town in 1971. Hondo Crouch, the late Texas storyteller, bought the town in the 1970's. Then Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson wrote and recorded the famous song, making it become a tourist destination (not that there's much to see). The highway department long ago gave up marking the town officially - People stole the signs within hours of them being put up. For years now people have made handmade signs, but these too get stolen (I've seen them in restaurants all over the area).
